Otto Luening (15/06/1900 - 02/09/1996), an American composer; born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, died in New York. He was born into a musical family; his father Eugene directed the Milwaukee Music Society. Otto Luening studied in Europe with Ferruccio Busoni and Philipp Jarnach. He conducted opera in Chicago and later at the Eastman School of Music. He taught at the University of Arizona, Bennington College, and Columbia University. He is known for his compositions for the flute, and electronic music using flute sounds. Luening died on 2 September 1996, in New York City.
