The Italian composer Nicola Porpora wrote three Notturni de defonti. Nicola Antonio Porpora remains one of those forgotten Baroque composers in history, but during his long life he enjoyed considerable fame, first as a rival to Georg Frederic Handel in London and then, until his death in 1768, as court composer in Vienna and Naples. The three 'Notturni der i Defunti' on this CD are completely unknown works. They were only rediscovered in the 1970s and although the title of the works - 'nocturnes' - suggests a serenade or other relaxing work, they are in fact religious compositions, written for All Souls' Day and hence the full title 'noctures for the dead'.
