Jean-Marie Rousseau (ca.1725 - 17/02/1784), a French composer, from Dijon. In his early years, he was a chorister in Dijon, Arras and Beauvais and choir master of the "Onze Lieve Vrouw" (Notre Dame) cathedral of Tournai (Doornik) from 1762 till his death in 1784. He composed 16 masses (a 4 and 5), 3 Te Deums voor soli and chorus and 41 motets.

He composed the work for the approaching death of a friend, but died on the way to Lille to his funeral. Thus the requiem was first performed at the funeral of the composer himself.
