Adam Vaclav Michna (30/06/1600 - 16/10/1676), a Czech composer and poet, from Jindrichuv Hradec (Bohemia).

Adam Michna is one of the most famous Czech poets and musicians of the 17th century. In his works he expressed all the pain and yearning of Europe, torn by the Thirty Years War. From 1645 he worked as an organ player in Jindrichuv Hradec, wherefrom he made several journeys to Prague, Vienna and probably Steier. Owing to his contacts with Jesuit colleges, most of his works were printed in the Academic printing house of the Jesuit College in the Clementinum in Prague. He composed three substantial religious choral works with instrumental accompaniment together with his own poetic Czech lyrics: Ceská mariánská muzika (Czech Marian Music, 1647), Svatorocní muzika (Holy Year Music, 1661) and Loutna ceská (Czech Lute, 1653). The former two hymn books marked the turn in catholic spiritual song. Soon they proved inseparable part of newly published hymn books, with numerous songs even becoming folk. What stands out is their musical, easy-to-remember melody and homophonous style.
Latin church works, on the other hand, were composed in the Venetian style (G. Gabrieli) and are comparable with works of Heinrich Schütz: 5 masses, a requiem (1654), 2 Litanies, Te Deum composed in printed collection Sacra et Litaniae (1654), Magnificat, and the most artistic excellent Missa Sancti Wenceslai. The titles of other pieces have come to us; these, however, are not preserved.
