Terje Bjørklund (02/01/1945), a Norwegian composer. He was born in Narvik. Upon receiving his Masters Degree in Musicology from the University of Oslo (1971), he studied composition with Finn Mortensen at the Norwegian State Academy of Music (1971-73). He has worked at the Trondheim Conservatory of Music since 1973, where he today serves as a professor in the subjects of composition and music theory. He initiated jazz education at the Conservatory in 1979. Bjørklund was an active jazz pianist until 1980, and has mediated his experience in the textbook Modern Jazz Improvisation (1983). He received the Buddy Award in 1983, the highest honour from The Norwegian Jazz Federation, for his efforts within Norwegian jazz life. Composition has been a priority with Terje Bjørklund since 1980, primarily oriented towards serious art music. Harmony has been a fundamental element in many of his works, and the nuances in the variation of the chords and sounds evokes modern jazz associations. He has written a number of commissions for choir, orchestra and various solo - and chamber music combinations. A particular preference for strings is evident, perhaps reflecting the rich string milieu found in Trondheim. Bjørklund's music was presented during the LOOC festival "Olympic Winterland" in Tokyo in April, 1993. Terje Bjørklund was the "composer in residence" at the Festival of North Norway, 1993.
